It’s the variety
As an electrical engineer with NIPSCO, I spend a lot of time testing and troubleshooting equipment used in electric power generation. I also look for opportunities to update technologies and implement design improvements that increase efficiency or reliability. One of the great things about my job is that no two days are alike.

I see the results of my work each day
There is probably no better feeling than putting a new project into service. Every time I walk by one of my jobs, I look at it and think, “I did that!” Recently, I completed a large and important project that lets us monitor vibrations in motors and fans, identify excessive wear, make repairs and avoid equipment failure and costly downtime.

We’re a real team
Although my job is interesting and my benefits are great, I think my favorite thing about working here is the people. We work so well together, and we’re such good friends, it’s like a home away from home. We get along so well, it’s never hard to come to work. That’s what’s special about NiSource.

From summer intern to NIPSCO professional
My first exposure to NIPSCO was as an intern, and I had such a great experience that I accepted a full-time position before I graduated. Now, I’m involved with real-time operations and working in a dynamic, constantly changing environment, which I really enjoy. The team I work with is friendly and supportive. And, the atmosphere is open and relaxed. I learn something new every day and I know my contributions make a difference. You can’t ask for more than that from a job.

Preparing for the “what if…?”
My decisions can be critical to maintaining the uninterrupted flow of power to customers. It’s a big responsibility, so doing my job well is a real source of pride. A big part of my work involves studying the local transmission network and making sure we’re prepared for the “what if” scenario. What if a line goes down or a piece of equipment fails? It’s my responsibility to make sure that there is no interruption of power and no damage to equipment, even when the unexpected occurs. It’s very satisfying to be part of such important work.

Combining aptitude with attitude
I think the kind of person who thrives in a NiSource career is self-motivated and self-reliant—a professional who can make decisions independently and be accountable for them, and a team player who can collaborate with others. In my position, you have to combine those traits with an engineering aptitude, an eye for detail and the ability to be meticulous and thorough in everything you do.
